RISK AND METHOD STATEMENT(RAMS)
If your company employs five or more members of staff a health and safety policy is a legal requirement.
Risk assesments
Current UK Law states that all organisations that employ 5 or more staff are required to carry out written health and safety risk assessments covering all hazards. HSE details a 5-step approach to conducting these risk assessments.
- Identify hazards in the workplace
- Identify those at risk from the hazards
- Evaluate the danger also taking into account the likelihood of accidents. Identify and evaluate existing controls that are in place to reduce risks
- Record findings on a suitable form
- Review the assessment on a regular basis or when things change for example new equipment or processes change.
Method statement
Accompanying all risk assessments will be a method statement. Method statements, sometimes called ‘a safe system of work’ are documents that detail the way in which tasks should be completed to adhere to safe working practices. A Method statement is usually broken into 4 sections.
- Section 1 of your method statement document is the header information and should be used to provide information to your staff or prospective clients
- Section 2 is a summary of the main hazards that are present and the control measures that must be implemented as a result.
- Section 3 is used to describe the task in more detail
- Section 4 is the step by step guide and used to explain in detail the steps that must be taken if the task is to be carried out safely. It’s important to include all relevant details in the order that you expect them to be carried out
